Consultation opens on safety principles for automated vehicles in Wales
The UK government is consulting on draft safety principles for self-driving vehicles, which it says will apply in Wales as well as England and Scotland.
A UK government consultation on draft statutory safety principles for automated vehicles is open until September 2026.
The government says the principles would guide decisions on whether automated vehicles can be deployed on Great Britain’s roads and on their ongoing monitoring after authorisation.
The draft principles cover vehicle control, hazard anticipation and reaction, obeying traffic rules, interaction with other road users and adapting to road conditions. The government says the underlying standard is at least the safety level of careful and competent human drivers.
The announcement says this is a reserved matter under the Automated Vehicles Act 2024 and that the principles apply in England, Scotland and Wales. The consultation seeks views from road-user and road-safety organisations, self-driving vehicle businesses and other interested parties.
