UK awards £7.3m for electric and hydrogen aircraft projects

The UK Government has announced £7.3 million for eight projects involving electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft.

It says the funding will support work on infrastructure including aircraft charging and hydrogen storage, as well as trials intended to help electric and hydrogen aircraft operate at UK airports.

The announcement forms part of a wider £43 million package for next-generation aviation technology, according to the government. It also says a further £2.5 million will be invested before March 2027 in projects including hydrogen-powered ground vehicles, airport decarbonisation and a hydrogen-powered jet-engine test.

For travellers and businesses in Wales, the announcement is a UK-wide technology and infrastructure programme rather than a confirmed local service or airport commitment.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “The next generation of flight is taking off in the UK.”
