Electric truck, van and depot-charging support: what the £1bn package offers

UK Government has announced a £1bn package of support for businesses moving to electric vans and trucks, combining Zero Emissions Truck and Van grants with additional Depot Charging Scheme funding. The measures are intended to address vehicle purchase costs and the cost of installing charging infrastructure.

Under the announcement, the heaviest zero-emission trucks could receive up to £81,000 off the purchase price, covering up to 40% of the cost. The van grant would continue to offer up to £5,000 off a new electric van. Those are maximum figures: eligibility and the final support available depend on the vehicle and scheme rules.

Charging support for depots

The government says businesses and public authorities could receive up to £1m towards charging infrastructure for vans, coaches and electric HGVs, covering up to 70% of costs. It describes £170m of the package as an uplift for the Depot Charging Scheme.

The release presents the schemes as a way to reduce operators’ exposure to fuel-price uncertainty. It also cites wider government spending on public charging and the Electric Car Grant, but those are separate measures from the truck, van and depot package.

What this means for Wales

For Welsh fleet operators, the key question is whether the grant contribution closes enough of the gap on vehicle and charging costs for a planned replacement cycle. The announcement gives headline ceilings rather than a guarantee for every business, so prospective applicants still need to check the applicable scheme criteria, depot connection needs and vehicle availability before treating the figures as a funded commitment.
